Reasons to Choose Health Programs in the Vocational Schools

All over the world, medical education is under question and the goals of medical education is tried to be redefined. This situation isn’t surprising considering the dynamic structure of medical education and the rapid changes in the practices of medical education. It can be said that these efforts aim at improving the medical education. Among these efforts, there are a variety of studies focusing on the improvement of assessment and evaluation system, which is an important component of medical education. In general terms, assessment is defined as the expression whether an entity has certain qualities or not, and if so, the expression of the degree of those qualities through numbers or symbols depending on observation. Evaluation is the process of decision making about the assessment results based on a criterion. As can be seen, assessment is a prerequisite for the evaluation and evaluation is decision making depending on the results of the assessment. Therefore, the evaluation has to be objective. The objectivity of evaluation is directly proportionate to the objectivity of assessment results. The accuracy of the assessment results is closely related to some qualities of assessment tools. Among these qualities, there of most important ones are reliability, validity and practicality. However, even though the assessment tools have these qualities, they don’t yield accurate results when the assessment is conducted without considering the target behaviors that will be achieved by students. As a result, when assessing the target behaviors, it is important to use the accurate assessment and evaluation tools.

The change in today’s educational systems from behaviorist to constructivist approach has led some changes in assessment and evaluation systems. Traditional assessment and evaluation tools are used in Behaviorist approach while the alternative assessment and evaluation tools have gained more importance in constructivist approach. Alternative assessment and evaluation tools are expressed as the methods that assess the affective and psychomotor behaviors along with the cognitive behaviors. Not only the knowledge, but also the skills in cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains should be evaluated together. While the traditional assessment and evaluation methods generally measure the knowledge step of cognitive domain, alternative assessment and evaluation methods give the opportunity to evaluate the students in a number of ways.
